Gold Prospecting Books

If you're new to prospecting and don't have someone showing you the ropes, do your homework. Hit the library, book shops and Internet to learn where to find gold, how to extract it, etc.

Ask around and you'll get different opinions on prospecting books. My favorite happens to be The Gold Prospector's Handbook. My least favorites, and I'm sorry to do this because they're a good company with good products, are the Garrett books. They seem to be more about pitching Garrett pans, detectors, etc than about gold prospecting how-to information.

If shopping online, Amazon has a few gold books and is helpful with all the customer reviews, but the prospecting books at Black Cat Mining has a much better selection of books and maps. They also have a section on rockhounding and gem hunting.

I still say start at the library. Read all the titles you can find and buy the ones you want to keep. If your local library doesn't carry a good selection of gold prospecting books, try a university library, especially one with a decent geology program.

Enjoy your reading!
